Florida Ranks #1 for Economy and Climbs to #6 Overall in U.S. News’ Best States List
By Amy Connolly

Florida is on the rise—literally. In the latest U.S. News & World Report Best States rankings, the Sunshine State earned the No. 1 spot for economy, No. 2 for education, and No. 6 overall, jumping three places from last year’s overall ranking of 9th.

These rankings are based on a comprehensive evaluation of eight key categories: health care, education, natural environment, opportunity, economy, crime and corrections, infrastructure, and fiscal stability. With 71 different metrics in play, Florida’s performance is a testament to its growing strength in multiple sectors.

What’s Driving Florida’s Economic Success?

According to U.S. News, the state’s explosive growth and thriving tourism industry were major contributors to its top economic ranking. With millions of visitors flocking to its world-famous beaches, amusement parks, and cruise ports, tourism plays a vital role in Florida’s GDP.

Agriculture is another powerhouse. Florida's citrus groves and year-round vegetable production make it a key player in U.S. food supply chains.

Tourism also fuels a significant portion of the state’s sales tax revenue, allowing Florida to remain one of the few states without a personal income tax—a perk that continues to attract both retirees and entrepreneurs.

Education Shines Too

Florida also earned the No. 2 spot for education, showing marked improvement in public school performance, higher education access, and affordability. This progress reflects long-term investments in school choice, teacher support, and university systems.
